When Should I Start Training My Puppy?

Many owners mistakenly believe they need to wait until their puppy is older before beginning training. In reality, puppies are most impressionable during their first few months of life.

Starting training early helps your puppy learn:

• Housebreaking and potty training
• Basic obedience commands
• Proper socialization skills
• Leash manners
• Appropriate behavior around children and guests

Without clear guidance, puppies will create their own rules. Unfortunately, those rules may include jumping on visitors, pulling on the leash, excessive barking, chewing furniture, or ignoring commands when distractions are present.

Dogs learn through repetition and consistency. Every time a behavior is allowed, reinforced, or ignored, your puppy receives information about what is acceptable.

For example:

• Allowing your puppy to jump may teach them that jumping gets attention.
• Allowing them to pull on walks teaches them that pulling gets them where they want to go.
• Inconsistent  house rules create confusion and anxiety.
